Future Vinyl Mix

Here’s a label I’m ashamed to say I didn’t have any releases on vinyl – Future Vinyl. I don’t know why I didn’t have any of these on the old black wax as it was the sound that I felt was pushing the scene forward in 1993 with complex amens and heavy sub bass. Unfortunately the style burned itself out by late ’95 but that’s not to say that some wannabe-purist Junglist from The Midlands didn’t download the whole label 25 years later; this lot has been ready-to-mix in a virtual folder before this blog even started. How criminal is that?

You’ll also find the track The Juice by W. Wilson on the sublabel Future Recordings as a little Brucey-Bonus. I first heard the opener as an intro by Jumping Jack Frost in the land before time – it took me an age to find that Star Trek version among the glut of Scottie remixes…

“We’re not gonna die, we’re gonna get out of here!”

Amenology II

Some of the stuff I’ve got my grubby hands on the last few weeks; not necessarily 2022 releases (although there’s a few) but tunes I’ve either been unaware of or never got round to adding to my collection – some of the tunes date back to 1996 for Gawd’s sake. Anyway, the latest release from Wicked Jungle is in there and get’s a full length *snigger* but my favourite, although not technically amen, is Tactical Request’s New Recruits which is a 7 year old banger. The eagle-eyed among you will notice a helluvah lot of releases from 117 Recordings, a label I discovered a decade too late: I don’t claim to be any kind of Jungle-don if some of you are saying,”whaaaa? How did he not know about this label?” All I know is that I went to a few events in my yoot and I still love the music. I’m trying real hard to get this blog alternating between new and oldskool Jungle but, man, it’s a challenge with the amount of new stuff coming out these days.

Some chee-yooooonz from the 1990s coming soon…

The Rez Mix

Couple of years ago I wondered if I could ever get bored with last century’s Jungle, despite the thousands of tracks I have at my fingertips. I’ll never be able to answer that question because that type of music from that specific era is seared into my DNA and, like your first love, you never forget it.

I did yearn for more modern amen though, managing to get a handful of tracks from SoundCloud but not quite the sound I was after; I asked Breakbeatscientist who gave me a couple of artists which in turn led me onto the Wicked Jungle label. I felt my heart flutter as I went through the tracks and knew it was a portal into the new Jungle sound which is now strong and like a kid in a sweetie shop, I messaged a few artists to more or less say thanks for dishing out this stuff again after 25 years. The label owner, Raket, got back to me, as did BC Rydah and a couple of others which pleased me no end, but Rez gave me a lot of feedback and it made me appreciate the work these artists do to resurrect not only that 90s sound, but the atmospherics that go with it as well.

Listening to Rez’s stuff, I’ve learnt that the already-untemplated Drum Funk scene can be randomised, with whatever you fancy sprinkled on top. It’s not all mashed-up amen though – compartmentalise Rez at your peril, as I’ve tried to show in this mix here.

Thanks for the exclusives brother.

Legend Records

I was thinking about a tune Bukem used to rinse and the only info I had off the top of my head was that it was on Legend Records. It was easy to find though – Spinback & Windmill’s Divine Inspiration – contrary to my opening blog posts nearly 3 years ago (whaaaa??!!), I’m now building my label collection up nicely and Legend is one of the full discographies I have including dubplates that you’ll technically find in this mix that were eventually released on other labels. Although I’d love to mix the 14,000 different versions of Champion Sound that I have, I decided to pick one which was actually a difficult decision; I went for the original mix.

I’m unsure as to whether I’ve posted this link before, but here’s a quote from Legend’s engineer The Invisible Man, and a nice little 5year old interview with Spinback: In Conversation With Total Science

Some great Hardcore Jungle sounds that were just maturing to their full darkness effect, it’s got more of a ‘93 flavour rather than the funky vibe the label gave off during its last hurrahs. It wasn’t a sad end to the label though – C.I.A replaced it. Anyway, always pleasing to see the Legend logo spinning round on a deck, even if it is digital, let the music commence:

High Time. What a tune. For 1993, it was way ahead of its time and will always hold a place in my ravin’ soul as it was the last track played by Donovan Badboy Smith before the greatest set of all time and one of the best nights of my life – Kenny Ken @ Andromeda VII NYE 1993/1994.

I managed to message Trax 15 years later thanks to that invention called the internet and found him to be very modest and also kind, sending me a copy of High Time that replaced my crappy mp3. Overall, a lovely chappy.

Nearly another 15 years later, the engineering from DJ Trax just gets better and there’s almost a Liquid flow to the tunes on hand here. Like the opener, Warmth, listen to the subtle way the amens progress halfway into the tune. Very clever. You’ll also notice track names like Attack Of The 50ft Amen; trust me, you’ll be crushed by ’em.

You’ll find at the top of the post links to his stuff, with a plethora of tracks to buy and stream. Sorry, I ain’t got no Spotify account.

Anyway, I’ll let your ears do the rest, closing out with something a bit tss-tss-tah-tisssss jazzy, baby.

And yup, there’ll be a DJ Trax 20th Century mix coming soon to a blog near you.

Nineteen Ninety Three

Like everyone else I hum to my bacon sandwiches as I prepare them in the kitchen and whistle random tunes (often out of key), like my F1 game menu music but this morning I found myself doing a ditty of Unity’s Keep It Coming.

As yesterday was the first time I’d had a proper mix in aaaaaages I just felt in a right ravey mood and 1993 is poyfect for this. I hope you get the vibe I was going for, and I ain’t messin’ with no long-ass stringy intro either.

Jon Tetly Volume I

There’s tons of wicked artists out there at the moment making oldskool-style Jungle and mixing their output is a privilege. Be unfair to say I have a favourite but Jon Tetly certainly gets my attention; he’s prolific, with equal amounts of quality throughout. There’s also movie samples galore all tightly executed in articulate songs that have a lovely flow about them. In my humble opinion, his amens are perfect but let’s not pigeon-hole him into one genre: you’ll see from one of his latest Bandcamp releases that 1980s remixes are top of the order on his Twitch stream and there’s also a bouncing Happy Hardcore element to some of his productions as well as experimental DnB.

Jon hails from sunny Bolton, Lancashire and discovered Hardcore whilst still in short trousers in ’91 listening to Stu Allen on Piccadilly 103 on the weekends and other stations like Sunset 102 Manchester plus a pirate radio station called IBC. As said himself, he was a Hardcore Head from the off and started buying vinyl a year later. Using Ableton & Renoise among other bits of hardware, Jon Tetly (one of his many aliases) creates 1994/95 vintage Jungle but mainly focuses on 1993 Hardcore Darkside production, something he pointed out to me that was a short-lived style before Jungle really took off. I never thought of it as a tiny span in time as I was slap bang in the middle of it and it’s such a brilliant memory for me that it seemed like it lasted for years, but in reality probably less than one, so nice one JT – a pocket of an era that lasts with us Darksiders forever.

Here’s a mix of one of his 2022 EPs released at the start of the year (Atomic World) plus some other free booty on his SoundCloud account… and an unreleased gem of an intro.

Think you know Amen? Think again.

Eze-G Mix

I was going through the famous Old Trainers EP as I found the actual track names on ‘Cogs and saw that one copy has sold for an eye-watering £70. Before getting wistful about nabbing that bad boy on wax, I decided to do an all Eze-G mix.

Upbringing the roots of early Jungle Techno, be prepared for melodic sub bass, infectious breaks with top-notch Amen scatterings aplenty and a general Hardcore vibe – something maybe achievable today but back then was in my opinion breakthrough stuff.

Standby for proper vinyl pops and crackles (these are the only rips I had… which others would say adds to the vibe of the whole set😬) and some dodgy mixing as I felt these releases should be beat-matched in an oldskool DJ styleee (albeit digitally). This was hard to mix but hopefully it’s worth it.

Ever since 1992 when the word ‘Jungle Techno’ enters my head these tunes represent it. The intro to this mix, Music Box, is verrrry similar to the theoretical essence of the scene in my bonce. Absolute bliss. As for the last track, woweeeee

You want some Hardcore Jungle? Do ya? Then come get some.

Ruff In The Jungle

There’s some fun on Soundcloud, Junglewars 2022, modern twistedness with a ragga flavour with the added bonus of a contribution from Rez “I don’t even travel with no selecta” Junglist. You’ll find a lot of free downloads in there too, check it out.

Some new fresh stuff to celebrate the excellent Karma Recordings second release opens this mix with other tracks that are – gee whizz, forgive me – a couple of years old; here’s proof that the Jungle sound has been reborn and believe me, there’s some stonkers coming out later this year… 🤯
