Old vs New: Round Two

Being as Round One hit a few chords and was pure fun, here’s another one with oldskool mixed into new. The older ’90s stuff is a strange concoction that wouldn’t work on their own but the alternating new tracks help the mix along. There’s a rarity from me in ’95/6 JumpUp-Tech that was a sound I despised so much that by January 1998 I switched to commercial trance for a couple of years. So why put in D-Power’s Beef? It was an ID that had me stumped for about 24 hours from my mate Chaddi’s tape collection so I had to swerve to the Rolldabeats & TuneID forums where the replies were posted in minutes. Thank you Internet. There’s also a rare ‘94 version of Danny Breaks’ Volume One on his Droppin’ Science label that I recently found on iTunes of all places, a Ragga Jungle breakneck 2006 remix from Stalefish that randomly popped in my head whilst driving on the M42 last week and a Galvatron fave – check out his 👉merchandise👈; I’ve already bought an exclusive khaki baseball cap! Usual quality from DJ Skye, the latest Jon Tetly release and a Tim Reaper tune I love so much that I didn’t need to trawl through the 200+ tracks I’ve got of his as I know the name of it: Globex Corp Volume 5 02, how sad is that? Sprinkle on a Slammin’ Vinyl ker-lassic and this unusual set is ready for your lugholes. Finally, many, MANY thanks to Raket, owner of Wicked Jungle Records, for this exclusive which is the set opener. Proper vibes business… and how cool was my incoming email?!

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did mixin’ it up.

Old vs New: Round One

The hundredth post, and a special one too! Something that’s been brewing in my mind for quite a few years now: oldskool and new Jungle in the same recorded set; I didn’t want to execute it as it seems… wrong, or unethical, somehow. Listening to some of my earlier blog trash mixes, I’ve unintentionally done it before anyway. At the end of the day it’s just a bit of fun and I practised this set beforehand to see if it worked as some tracks didn’t melt into others and were quite offkey. I’ve utilised my software quite a bit on this mix with autokey and a little time stretching to help get it right because the old tunes should be, y’know, respected – but so should the producers of the newer stuff that have created these Jungular sounds in the same faithful vein.

Anyway, you’ll find the old tracks obvious anthems and the new tracks some of my tip-top absolute favourites of the last decade or so, all alternating, with around 3 decades between each release. I put Jon Tetley’s and my track Vengeance last because I’m, like, vain. And did I really, really, really mix Hyper-On Experience’s super-dark 2023 Champion Sound remix into that completely happy-bonkers 1993 Red Alert & Mike Slammer’s In Effect? Shit yes!

There’ll be more of these I reckon; deeper, more obscure ones as this set was easy to compile with anfums and a virtual folder named “new faves”, so I’ll need to delve deeper into the archives for similar mixes. Watch this space.

Riiiiight then. Bored of the Helicopter Tune intro yet after thirty goddamn years? No? Me neither.

Nu HappynDark Shenanigans

Here’s a random mix of what I’ve been messing about with lately and there’s an unsurprising sprinkling of happy hardcore because I’ve recently discovered some right cheeky remixes. You’ll also find a track from the Jungle Testing Grounds maestro, Train Tracks pt. 2. I’ve been kinda obsessed with #1 lately and thought, hmm, wonder if there’s a sequel? Yay.

Kicking off with, wait for it, a ’92 bootleg! Good golly, I hope there’s a bit of everything for everyone in this mix, some wicked energy. I’ve been sitting on this mix a week as there’s a couple of howlers but after listening to it a couple of times, I’ve posted worse. It reads a weird set, but the jump from light to darkness via the notorious Crazy Daydreams was something I was experimenting with and it seems to work. Hope you think so too.

2023 Junglin’ Summery Summary

Aaarggghhh! Some serious Jungle-shizzle going down this year, even more so than 2022. This is a proper buzz and the quality available now is nothing short of stunning. There’s the usual culprits in this mix including Tim Reaper, Subjects, Kid Lib, a nice collaboration between Dom & DJ Crystl, my good pals Jon Tetly & Rez and a remix that’s been kept under wraps for a year. Keep yer peepers out for that Jim Bean, too – insane stuff. There’s also the opener to DJ Skye’s excellent Egyptian-themed quadrilogy, soon to be released under the Geomagnetic umbrella label. Also note the heavy slammer that is Harmony’s Dream on Future Retro London. I saw a video a few months back of Dwarde (I think) dropping this in a club and Tim Reaper nodded, pointed and smiled – says it all really.

As for Neekeetone’s Tomorrow – which is on a FREE album – it took me half a day of intense thinking where I’d heard those pianos before; I kept remembering they were on a really, really shit Jungle track that didn’t loop properly yet I know I wouldn’t have bought anything like that on vinyl. It then occurred to me what tune it was… mine 😂😂. I’d sampled the pianos from Busta Rhyme’s Extinction Level Event album and slapped an amen on them on Music 2000 for the Playstation 1 (<<- cool video alert) back in the day. There’s 2 hours of my life I won’t get back.

The original sample. Not a bad tune actually.

Finally, THE remix I’ve been waiting for. For exactly thirty years. Thank you Hyper-On Experience, I even watched you making the bugger on Twitch.

Champion Sound, oh my word (or move forward, however you interpret it)

Jungliztix 2 (2013-2014)

I previously posted how I only found decent 90s style new Jungle about 3 years ago – what a crock of shit. Again delving into my files that sit in between the start of the century and this decade, I’ve unearthed some right pearlers. There’s a few tracks in this mix from a brilliant 8205 Recordings album that Dev/Null runs… and it’s FREE! Abyss’s track from the above album, Don’t Be Afraid, replicates those brilliant toms from the original Hawaii Five-0 theme, a show I used to love in early childhood just for those intro music drums themselves proving I loved musical rhythm as far back as the late 1970s. There’s some stonkers in here that I was pissing myself with whilst mixing them, especially Probe-One’s Voyager, a tune I have in a virtual folder simply named ‘faves’. Overall lots of classy darkside man with some ace jump-up stuff at the end.

My mission with this blog was to phase away from the amen, maybe go back to Hardcore roots breaks and deeper Jungle without that infamous sample. Thing is, the whippersnappers these days keep dishing out the bloody stuff. Long may it continue.

1995 Part II

Considering 1995 was my favourite year for Jungle/DnB with its tearing amens and ragga-infused jump up reverse basslines, I thought there’d be more blog posts on it but there’s just this one that wasn’t all that good really. This mix is the more spiritual me and I always think of them ravin’ bezzies Ian & Paul when I (virtually) spin these; pure amen mash-up badboy business that I’m proud to say I mostly owned on vinyl.

Regarding SS’s Limb By Limb – if you know, you know.

These tunes are nearly 30 years old (wtf?!) but by God, they ain’t half stood the test of time. Bring it.

Nookie Lickweed

The legend that is Nookie is still smashing out stuff after three decades and the artist has a lovely Liquid DnB side to him – check this out, it’s Gonna Be Alright. Odd blog post title because there’s another set of this style with a Nookie remixed intro on the net that’s not as amen-driven; probably a better mix than mine but I ask to Give A Little Love…

2K DnB – a set for Andi

At the turn of the century, due to circumstances, my decks – real, proper ones with a mixer and everything – were relocated at my mate Andi’s house. I used to go round every Monday at 6pm, spin a few, then discuss the tunes with him and we’d use all kinds of posh words to describe the tracks. The other brother Dick would always boogie in, pause for two seconds, then give his technical analysis: “Tune!” and promptly walk out.

Andi recently posted a simply astounding depiction of D. Kay’s Pressure Lock (where he got his DJ name from) on our WhatsApp group and the man still knows his stuff:

“Class tune. Something I always enjoyed was the clean, crisp breaks. Something clinical yet deep.”

DJ Presha Lock

I’ve mixed this set for Andi cos it’s his birthday (happy 40th chap – good grief, we used to laugh until our sides hurt didn’t we?!), also for nostalgic reasons as it was fundamentally the last year I properly purchased vinyl. ‘Twas a good year for DnB: accelerating away from the templated rhythm of Techstep and Jungle, rebirthing itself with its very own individual sound and listening back, the technology going into the tracks was of an excellent standard.

Okay, there’s some anthem-bashing here, but this is an exclusive set of some of the vinyl I owned that year and I really enjoyed mixing it with beat sync OFF, paying justice to how difficult it was to beat mix at the time with a rotary pitch control rather than a linear one.

Jon Tetly Volume III

Soundcloud

Bandcamp

To top up the buzz of not knowing what day it is during the weird lull between Christmas & New Year, here’s the third instalment of Jon Tetly’s noises. He’s currently smashing out more bangers than a 1970s porn star (minus horseshoe moustache) and Mr. Tetly doesn’t negotiate with amens – he tortures them… in a nice kinda way in this politically correct world I suppose. I’d also heavily advise you to scroll through his SoundCloud releases as there’s some freebies to be found. As for that Rui Da Silva bootleg opener: Jeeezus.

Hold yer breath.

Jungle Bellz 22

A simply astonishing second half of the year for releases, I can’t decide whether the Half Term Report or this set – both championing new Jungle tracks in a mid 90’s style – is the better; I’ll settle for ALL of 2022 being an amen cracker.

I’d love to waffle on about each tune but these are just a fraction of what’s being produced and it was quite difficult to compile this mix from the plethora of new tracks that have come out this year. What I will say is that the opener always makes me smile… for justifying my atrocious transitions, let’s just say I was in the Christmas spirit and I was experimenting for 2023.

Festive Greetingz y’all!!!
